New vs Open-Box vs Used Appliances: How to Choose (and Save)
We're family-owned and have sold appliances in Portland since 1989 (37+ years). Every appliance we list is a one-of-a-kind unit — inspected and tested before it goes live.
Brand new, sealed
- ✓Brand new, still in the original sealed box
- ✓No prior use, no prior owner
- ✓Full manufacturer warranty where applicable — 365 days on most GE models
- ✓Our 90-day warranty on top
Unboxed or returned
- ✓Often just opened to verify the model — or a customer return
- ✓Inspected and tested by our team before it's listed
- ✓Cosmetic notes (scratches, dents, missing parts) documented in the listing
- ✓Full function at a lower price
Fully functional, documented
- ✓Passes our full function test before it's listed
- ✓Any damage is documented in the listing — no surprises
- ✓As-is cosmetic condition, lowest price of the three
- ✓Our 90-day warranty, same as everything else
What We Test Before Any Unit Is Listed
- ✓Power-on test — every unit runs before it's listed, no exceptions
- ✓Function check by type — cooling for refrigerators and freezers, full wash and spin cycles for washers, a dry cycle for dryers, heat and ignition for ranges
- ✓Water connections and seals where applicable
- ✓Visual inspection — any damage is written into the listing
- ✓Safety check — cords, plugs, glass, and controls
Every listing is a unique single unit. There's no "more in stock" — when one sells, it's gone. That's why the listing details matter: they're the only record of that exact appliance.
What the Price Difference Buys You
| Grade | What you're paying for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| New | No prior use, sealed box, full manufacturer warranty | Premium |
| Open-Box | Full function, minor cosmetic notes, tested by us | Mid |
| Used | Fully functional, documented wear | Lowest |
All three pass the same test process before they're listed. The difference is the appliance's history — and our warranty covers every grade, so the risk gap between them is smaller than it looks.
When to Pick Which
Budget-first? Go used — with documented flaws.
The listing tells you exactly what the flaw is, the unit still passed our full test, and the 90-day warranty has your back. This is where the biggest savings live.
Risk-averse or warranty-first? Go new or open-box.
Open-box units get the same test as used — just with less wear and usually a longer cosmetic lifespan. Most GE open-box units carry a 365-day manufacturer warranty, so you're covered like a new purchase.
Warranty on Every Grade
No matter which grade you choose, every appliance comes with our 90-day warranty — parts and labor, in-home service, and a fix-or-replace guarantee. Most GE open-box units add a 365-day manufacturer warranty on top.
